Gopalan received her PhD in endocrinology from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1964.
Gopalan worked as a breast cancer researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She was a leading advocate for breast cancer awareness and screening, and she helped to establish the Breast Cancer Fund in 1991. Gopalan died from colon cancer in 2009.
