France Faces Hung Parliament, Deep Uncertainty After Senate Elections

Macron's Party Loses Majority, National Rally Triumphs

France is facing a hung parliament and deep political uncertainty after the three main political groups of the left, center, and right failed to win a clear majority in the Senate. The Senatorial elections, held on 24 September 2023, resulted in an unprecedented victory for the National Rally, the far-right party led by Marine Le Pen.

Official results published by the Interior Ministry showed that the National Rally and its allies won about 33 percent of the vote, far ahead of President Emmanuel Macron's centrist coalition. Macron's party, La République en Marche (LREM), lost its majority in the Senate, leaving the government with no clear path to passing legislation.

Challenges Ahead for Macron

The hung parliament poses a major challenge for Macron, who needs to secure support from other parties to pass laws. The National Rally, which has been making significant gains in recent elections, could emerge as a key player in the negotiations, potentially giving Le Pen more influence over French politics.
