Algerian Boxer Imane Khelif Advances to Round of 16 in Paris Olympics
Controversial Bout Ends Abruptly
WEB PARIS Algerian Imane Khelif moved past Angela Carini when the Italian surprisingly abandoned their welterweight round of 16 fight after 46 seconds of the opening round.
Khelif's first fight will do nothing to calm the controversy around the boxer's entrance into the 2024 Paris Olympics. Khelif was disqualified from the World Championships in 2022 for refusing to fight an Israeli opponent, sparking outrage and debate.
Despite the controversy, Khelif remains a talented boxer and will be a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming rounds of the Olympics. She will face Maya Rostamova of Tajikistan in the quarter-finals.
